Overview
The majority of asbestos exposure occurs in occupational settings. Unfortunately most people are exposed to asbestos in industrial environments and may not even know about it until it’s too late to protect themselves. Asbestos was used quite frequently as insulation and fire-retardant for piping, boilers, electrical fixtures and other materials. Shipyards generally used these materials throughout their vessels thus causing asbestos exposure to those who worked in the industry.
Until the 1970’s, asbestos awareness and the health risks of asbestos exposure were unknown. Many who worked in the naval and commercial shipyards prior to the 70’s were at risk of harmful asbestos exposure. Naval ships, in particular, had heavy use of asbestos materials due to the fact that they needed to be resistant to fire and temperature transfer in a combat situation.
In this section of the site you’ll find a list of Navy ships that contained asbestos in their construction. If you worked or served on any of these vessels, there is a chance that you have been exposed to potential harmful asbestos.
